We have updated our reference database, the SARS-CoV-2 Variant Typing Dataset.
In addition to performing regular updates to our SARS-CoV-2 reference dataset, the IDNS Coronavirus References, we also update our Typing dataset to include a representative of each circulating variant of interest. The SARS-CoV-2 Variant Typing Dataset is available in our IDNS3 Coronavirus App, and it can be used for typing, searches, and alignment purposes.
The newly described SARS-CoV-2 variant BF.7 can now be found in SmartGene's SARS-CoV-2 Variant Typing Dataset. BF.7 is a sublineage of Omicron BA.5 (BA.5.2.1.7), showing an increased number of mutations mainly in the Spike protein. Up to now, cases of BF.7 have been found mostly in Europe and the USA. BF.7 can be distinguished easily from BA.5 and other variants, the mutational pattern can be found here.
At SmartGene, we are continuously updating our Apps to make sure that new variants are represented as soon as possible, so they can be used for typing purposes. This update will help to ensure that the best possible representation of the circulating strains are available within SmartGene. Nevertheless, please understand that the complete, S-gene sequences (or preferably whole genomes) are required for the most precise determination of a sublineage.
